Help for Your Home

Can Your Calgary Home Support a Level 2 EV Charger?

Many Calgary homes can support Level 2 EV charging without a 200-amp service upgrade. We evaluate your electrical system and complete a professional load calculation before recommending the right solution for your home.

Electrical Panel Review

We Check Your Existing Electrical Service

We inspect the electrical equipment already serving your home.

  • Electrical panel condition
  • Available breaker space
  • 100A, 125A or 200A service
  • Existing electrical equipment

Professional Load Calculation

We Calculate Your Home’s Electrical Demand

We determine how much electrical capacity is currently available.

  • Heating and major appliances
  • Air conditioning and hot tubs
  • EV charger amperage
  • Future electrical plans

Honest Recommendation

We Recommend the Right EV Charging Solution

We clearly explain the safest options available for your home.

  • Use your existing panel
  • Install an EV energy management system
  • Adjust the charger amperage
  • Upgrade only when required

Our Honest Recommendation

A 100-Amp Service Does Not Automatically Mean You Need a 200-Amp Upgrade

We only recommend a panel or electrical service upgrade when the load calculation confirms it is genuinely required for safety, capacity, future expansion or electrical code compliance.

WHAT AFFECTS YOUR INSTALLATION

What Determines Your EV Charger Installation in Calgary?

Every home is different. Before installing a Level 2 EV charger, we evaluate your electrical service, charger requirements and the route from your panel to the charging location.

ELECTRICAL CAPACITY

Electrical Service & Panel Capacity

Your 100A, 125A or 200A service, available breaker space and existing electrical loads help determine how your EV charger can be safely connected.

  • 100A, 125A or 200A service
  • Available breaker space
  • Existing electrical loads

CHARGER REQUIREMENTS

Charger Size & Amperage

The charger and charging speed you choose affect the circuit requirements. We help determine an appropriate charging amperage for your home and vehicle.

  • Charger amperage
  • Dedicated circuit requirements
  • Vehicle charging needs

WIRE ROUTE

Distance & Installation Route

Installation requirements can change depending on the distance from your electrical panel and how the wiring reaches the charging location.

  • Indoor or outdoor wiring
  • Attached or detached garage
  • Underground electrical runs

CAPACITY OPTIONS

Load Management or Service Upgrade

If your existing electrical service has limited capacity, an EV Energy Management System may be an option before considering a larger electrical service.

EV CHARGER HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Avoid an Unnecessary Electrical Service Upgrade

An EV energy management system monitors your home’s electrical demand and allows your Level 2 charger to operate when sufficient capacity is available.

For some Calgary homes, this can provide reliable EV charging without upgrading the entire electrical service from 100 amps to 200 amps.

How EV Load Management Works

Your home receives the power it needs first. Your vehicle charges when capacity is available.

Home Electrical Demand

Heating, appliances, air conditioning and other equipment use the available electrical capacity.

Energy Management

The system continuously monitors your home’s electrical usage and identifies when capacity is available.

Level 2 EV Charging

The charger operates automatically when your electrical service has sufficient capacity.

Automatic Monitoring

Continuously measures your home’s electrical demand.

Safe Load Control

Helps prevent the electrical service from being overloaded.

Level 2 Charging

Provides practical home charging when capacity is available.

Potential Cost Savings

May avoid a complete electrical service upgrade.

Our Honest Recommendation

EVEMS is not suitable for every property. We complete a professional electrical load calculation first and recommend load management only when it provides a safe, practical and code-compliant solution.

We review the service size, panel configuration and existing electrical demand.

EVEMS / Load Management

Where appropriate, an approved Energy Management System may help manage when electrical capacity is available for charging.

Adding an EV charger does not automatically mean your home needs a larger electrical service. We assess the existing system and determine which installation options make sense for the home.

Existing Electrical Service

The home's existing and proposed electrical loads are considered before additional EV charging capacity is added.

200 Amp Service Upgrade

If the existing electrical system cannot appropriately support the additional load, a service upgrade may be considered.

Electrical Load Calculation

EV ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Your Home May Not Always Need a

200 Amp Service Upgrade

Some Calgary homes may be able to support EV charging using an approved Energy Management System (EMS / EVEMS) rather than immediately upgrading the electrical service.

The right option depends on your existing service, calculated electrical demand, EV charger requirements and the equipment being installed.

HOW LOAD MANAGEMENT WORKS

An Energy Management System can help coordinate electrical capacity between EV charging and other electrical loads in the home

FAQ

Straight Answers Before You Install

Every home and electrical system is different. We assess your panel, complete the required load calculation and explain your options before recommending an installation.

  • Professional electrical assessment
  • Honest recommendations
  • Permits and inspections when required
  • No unnecessary electrical upgrades
  • Do I need a 200-amp electrical service for a Level 2 EV charger?

Not necessarily. Many Calgary homes can safely support a Level 2 EV charger without upgrading to a 200-amp electrical service.

We complete a professional electrical load calculation first. If additional load management is needed, an EV Energy Management System may be an option instead of a service upgrade.

  • Can I install a Level 2 EV charger with a 100-amp service?

Yes, in some homes. A 100-amp electrical service does not automatically mean you need a panel or service upgrade.

It depends on your existing electrical loads, available capacity, charger amperage and charging requirements.

  • Will you recommend a panel upgrade if I do not need one?

No. Our goal is to recommend the safest and most practical solution for your home, not the most expensive option.

If your existing service can safely support the charger, we will tell you. When load management is appropriate, we will explain that option as well.

  • Do I need an electrical permit for an EV charger installation?

Yes, in many cases. Level 2 EV charger installations often require an electrical permit depending on the electrical work being completed.

When required, The Honest Electrician obtains the permit and coordinates the applicable electrical inspection.

  • Can you upgrade a Calgary home's electrical panel from 100 amps to 200 amps?

Yes, when a service upgrade is appropriate for the home. We first assess the existing electrical service and anticipated electrical demand. If additional capacity is required, we can discuss the appropriate panel or service upgrade and required coordination. Learn more on our Electrical Panel Upgrades page.

  • Do you install all types and brands of EV chargers?

We install many major residential Level 2 EV charger brands. These include Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, FLO, Wallbox, Emporia and other compatible chargers.

Before installation, we confirm that the charger is appropriate for the vehicle, electrical system and installation location.

  • Can you install an EV charger I already purchased?

Yes. We can install a customer-supplied charger provided it is approved for use in Canada and compatible with your home's electrical system.

Send us the manufacturer and model number before your appointment so we can review the charger requirements and installation instructions.

  • How do I choose the right EV charger for my home?

It depends on your vehicle and your home. The right charger depends on your daily driving, desired charging speed, available electrical capacity, installation location and future plans.

We can help you compare charger amperage, hardwired options, cable length, outdoor ratings and smart charging features.

  • Is a hardwired charger better than a plug-in charger?

Not always. Both configurations can be appropriate depending on the charger, charging output and installation location.

A hardwired charger provides a permanent connection and may support higher output. Where a receptacle installation is appropriate, the equipment and circuit must be selected for the continuous electrical load.

  • Can you install an EV charger outdoors?

Yes. We install EV chargers indoors and outdoors when the equipment is approved and suitable for the installation environment.

For Calgary conditions, we consider the charger's enclosure rating, mounting requirements and exposure to snow, rain, ice and temperature changes.

  • How long does an EV charger installation take?

Often, one scheduled visit is enough. Straightforward residential EV charger installations may be completed during one visit.

Longer wiring routes, finished walls, outdoor trenching, panel work or EV Energy Management Systems can require additional planning and installation time.

  • Which areas do you serve for EV charger installation?

We serve Calgary and several surrounding communities. Residential EV charger installation is available in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks and Springbank.

Contact us with your location to confirm service availability.

  • What is included in the EV charger assessment?

It includes a professional review of your electrical system and installation requirements.

    • Electrical panel and service evaluation
    • Professional electrical load calculation
    • Review of charger electrical requirements
    • Charger location and wiring route planning
    • EV Energy Management System review when applicable
    • Permit and inspection planning
